Robot Space Chef has been in the works since 2008, but most of the finished product here was made in 2010. There's somewhat of a lengthy history on their webpage but here's the basic gist: they started the album in 2008, stopped and did some live shows, released a single in December of 2009, then after some tinkering around they started back up on the project in the summer of 2010 and have been working on it the majority of 2011. Now it's finally done, and they have some limited edition t-shirts you should go cop. newcombmusics.net

Newcomb has a catalog of two LPs, one B-Side (currently), and two EPs. In 2005 they released their debut EP "In Stereo" which was delightfully griddy and dirty. If you want nice, raw, and unmastered electronica then give this EP a look. Then in 2006 they released their first LP, "Readings From the Oscilloscope." Pretty good stuff there, not much else to say just really ambitious for them at the time and it established their signature music style. Then in 2007 they did some singles and started up on their next EP which would be released in January of 2008 titled, "Gone, But Not Out." In this EP they were expanding their style and going into more of their dark tracks. Then later in 2008 they released a B-Sides to Readings From the Oscilloscope entitled, "Flip That Vinyl." Referencing actual likeness of a B-Sides. Now we get Robot Space Chef, all is good.

Fun fact, most people think the name Newcomb comes from The Newcomb Paradox or Newcomb, NY as the band is based out of New York City. But now they reveal that it comes from an old record player stereo system ad (depicted in the album cover) that looked cool to band members Matt Drescher and Mike Arton. They straight up just took the company's name, interesting. Also, the band announced via twitter today that there will be a B-Sides at some point as there is much unused/unfinished material from this album but they want to polish them up before a release so no official dates yet.

1. dynamic drive - 4:57
2. faulty faults - 2:20
3. a dormant stare - 5:47
4. lying empty beside my window - 3:19
5. pigs and missing children - 3:50
6. our ourmoury - 2:26
7. raining ice - 4:11
8. electronic panic show! - 7:38

Quaxar and MC Insufficient Funds - The Swag Tape

Yeah son, before swag was swag. 2004 saw the release of this rap mixtape from Quaxar and MC IF. The first one being Ya'll Stop Bloggin'. A fun, happy, enjoyable, upbeat romp. Straight out of Anchorage Alaska.

Each song on this album tries to tug at your heartstrings and get you feeling sentimental. The first track, Ya Burnt, is phenomenal and hits all the right chords with me. It starts out kind of slow and upbeat, and then builds to this powerful enjoyable feeling that knocks you off your ass. Starship Amazing members, Derek Haefer and Calvin Hansen refer to this feeling as the coveted, "oh shit moment." And it is definitely desereving of that title.

There's a song on their called, "Whatever You Want It To Be." That track really goes for the emotion, rather than just fun melodies for the sake of fun melodies. It has very carefully timed strings and chord progressions that I guarentee will paint some kind of portait in your head. And all their songs are opened to your own personal interpertation, which is one of the glories of electronic music. The title perfectly exemplifies the nature of that song and this band as a whole. It's not trying to just be one thing, it's whatever you want it to be.

"Pop That Corn" is another standout track. It starts out with this fun little melody, with growing heavy strings in the background. By the time the song is in it's third section you are completely taken by it. The end with all the croud voices and atomosphere really blends well together. Listen to this song when you're saying goodbye to someone, or starting life a new somehow. It shows a positive progression on how change can influence someone. Which mirror's the band's escapades. Their older works represent them as a different band. This is the new Starship Amazing, always looking forward, always improving.

You can download their albums, some that are pay what you want, and some that are only 5 dollars at starshipamazing.com. Throws these dudes a couple bones. Give 'em some burger/gas money.

Tracklisting:

1. Ya Burnt - 3:45
2. Baby Still Too Fat - 2:44
3. I know, collect 'em all. One from 1999 Mastercraft, another from 2002 We Are All Grizzly Bears, and this one from 2009 She Was A Prom Queen, And I Was A Hairdresser. It is very slow paced, glitchy, and electronic. Comparison maybe, James Blake? Only no vocals and less beat focused. Songs are pretty long and seem to go in movements. This is really an album you have to sit down and listen to all the way through. It's worth your time. As all their records are.

There isn't too much information about what these dudes are up to lately. Creating Planets front man, Jesse Harding, is a very mysterious dude. He doesn't do the social media thing. No facebook, twitter, tumblr, nothing. And if you're familiar with the group they self-produce their stuff and sell it on their website. creatingplanetsmusic.net. They aren't trying to promote their stuff and they let all their fame come from word of mouth. No advertisements or self promotion. And I really appreciate that, because they are heavy on keeping their artist vision. But damn it would be good to know what their up to right now. Because the group is still together as far as I know.

Tracklisting:

1. I mean god damn. You might remember their 2009 album Depressed, but Still Kind of Good Inside. Yeah, well apparently they worked on like 6 billion songs for that album that didn't make it to the thing. Some for good reason. But now we have access to all of their fucking finished, unfinished, and very early demo songs from that album. Two discs, 43 f'n tracks. Yeah son, ya ain't got nerfin' on this shit.

Now you can tell which songs could have made it into the original album, and which ones were given up very early on. A lot of these tracks are a minute or less. Most of those songs didn't make it to far past the drawing board, and for good reason. But songs like a loud abrasive mess, pixels, and especially, the passing of time, really could have been a part of the album, if not be some good bonus tracks at least. So yeah, it's one hella mixed bag, and if you're just a casual fan, you probably won't enjoy most of this stuff. But give it a listen if you're into Onion Finger.

Tracklisting:

Disc 1

1. droppin' sauce like it was burgers - 0:34
2. some old shits, real old shits - 1:29
3. straight from the muff warehouse - 3:19
4. you's a sucka! - 2:11
5. bloody lookin' popcorn chicken - 0:12
6. a loud abrasive mess - 4:29
7. dreams can take you to space faster than rocket ships! - 3:19
8. overcoat it with drizzled on star dust - 1:20
9. yeah sure i could borrow your car, or maybe i could just shoot myself in the face and cut out the middleman. no? - 1:56
10. too bad you lost all that weight, no mo' fat sex. - 4:11
11. love is first an inside job - 5:00
12. baby corn - 0:53
13. where do i find ghosts? - 1:14
14. natural dandruff (alt. mix) - 3:19
15. pixels - 7:26
16. mess man - 0:14
17. their ballsacks ain't help them any - 0:51
18. nope - 6:40
19. the rockhard thighs of a GOD - 1:24
20. birds be takin' flight (alt. early mix) - 4:49
21. got some giggles - 0:37

Disc 2

22. directly and BRUTALLY - 0:45
23. this is the end (nope) - 2:17
24. dang dang - 0:12
25. what a beautiful feature - 5:18
26. the passing of time - 13:41
27. brian, you dumbass mother fucker. Marshall Femmes was a man who made, eh, punk post rock electronic type music, who made heavy, paper chase style stuff. He honestly was one of the best in the game and was taken from us way too fuckin' soon. Jan. 18th 2007, at the age of 26, Femmes went on an oxycontin bender and after 3 hours took a 9mm to his head in a studio in Toronto. He had major emotional problems, and there are dark fuckin' parts of his music you immediately notice when listening to. He had some family issues, abusive father, i'll say no more. He had a drug problem, pills specifically. Dude was crazy talented and all kinds of fucked up.

So Marshall Femmes was working hard on an EP for a good 13 months fine tuning and refining his shit. Only 3 tracks were finished before his unfortunate suicide. The fourth track was put together by good friend to Femmes and music producer John Telfus. And Telfus took many quotes from an interview with Femmes from about 3 months before his death and mixed it to an unfinished demo from the EP. The title of that track itself is a quote from that interview.

Let me put it in perspective for you with a quote from that very same interview:

"...yeah, you know, the earth is a fucked up place and we all have to live in it. i mean, ya know, people who survive in this world are ones who are constantly lying to themselves, always hiding from the, the, the truth. i mean, ya know shit's fucked up..."

Tracklisting:

1. Drifted Space Dust - 3:29
2. Robo-Sex-Honkey - 7:18
3. Dial Up the Reverb - 8:09
4. Sample line from the closing track. Very heavy, dense, and emotional sounding electronica right here. You won't find it done any better by anyone else. Injustices have the current privilege, of not having to give a fuck anymore. They've been in the music game since 1986. Electronic music was a baby, or at best a dedicated niche at that point. Straight out of breakbeat heartland, Britain, Injustices have put out 12 albums along with 2 EPs over the course of their continuing career. This album, while not certainly their best work, is still as solid as ever. And it gets pretty heavy towards the end. The album is meant to be one long continuous song. Granted it's split up into movements, but it was conceived as one whole beast. The production value and fine tuning quality is high here. Really refurbishing their sound so it sounds absolutely perfect no matter how you listen to it. It is some solid stuff, but my favorite Injustices album is still Lifted From the Light from 2000. But hey, they're all enjoyable so pick this one up if you get a chance.

Tracklisting:

1. Famed horror gore core band Eqlipse dropped a new LP last month. And here it be! It's long and has some heavy rockin' shit, with sparse vocals. Some mainstream critics have been saying there are satanic undertones to this album, but I never looked into it that deep. In fact a reviewer (and I use that term loosely) over at Pitchfork said that the tracklisting alone had something to do with illuminati. Now you officially lost me. It's called 6 Dial. Though there are 5 tracks, hm. Glitch-hop is an interesting genre of music. Using heavy samples and making things all glitched out and skippy, but sounding pretty good. This album may be short but it's got it where it counts! The songs are all pretty up beat, sample heavy, and glitched out. The second song especially, Total Carnage, earns its title as it is the most glitched out track jumpin' all ova da filters and jumps and cuts. It's also a pretty fast song. Only 5 bucks bro, pick ya self up a copy. Speaking of which, you can get this album download style, or pick up a compact disc version, that CD tip, and vinyl. Jesus bro.
